When I tell people I’m a mindset coach, I often get a polite smile and a slightly puzzled look. Business owners in particular want to know what that actually means. Is it motivation? Therapy? Someone telling you to “think positive”? None of those, really. So let me explain, plainly, what a mindset coach for business owners does, and how you can tell whether you need one.
First, why I care about this question
I’ve run my own business, WOW Events, since 2008, and I co-founded WOWOS, a community for business owners. I know the late-night doubts, the pressure of payroll and the feeling of carrying every decision on your own shoulders. Over the years I’ve also delivered mindset training for teams at organisations like the Times Group, Aditya Birla Group, Emami and Star Group, and spoken at Bennett University, GIWA and the WOWOS QBR.
One pattern shows up again and again. Most of us try to fix the business from the outside first: a new strategy, a new hire, a new tool. Very often the real block isn’t in the plan. It’s in the person running it. That is where a mindset coach works.
What a mindset coach actually does
A business coach or consultant usually helps you with the “what”: your strategy, systems, sales process or numbers. A mindset coach helps with the “who”: the person making those decisions. In practice, my work with business owners tends to focus on four areas.
1. Clarity
Many owners are busy but not clear. They are reacting to the loudest problem of the day rather than moving towards something they have chosen. Coaching creates space to step back and answer simple but uncomfortable questions: What do I actually want this business to give me? What am I saying yes to that I should be saying no to?
2. Beliefs
We all carry beliefs about money, success, worth and risk, many of them picked up long before we started a business. “I have to do everything myself.” “If I charge more, people will leave.” “Things never stay good for long.” These beliefs quietly shape pricing, hiring, delegation and how big we allow ourselves to dream. A coach helps you notice them and test whether they’re still true.
3. Presence and confidence
How you show up in a pitch, a negotiation or a team meeting affects the outcome. Confidence isn’t a personality trait you either have or don’t. It is built through evidence and practice, and coaching gives you a structured way to build it.
4. Resilience
Every business has bad months. The difference is how long a setback stays with you. Part of my work is helping owners recover faster, so one difficult quarter doesn’t shake their confidence for a year.
What a mindset coach is not
It’s worth being clear about the boundaries, because they matter.
- Not therapy. Coaching is forward-looking and practical. If someone is dealing with clinical anxiety, depression or trauma, the right support is a qualified mental health professional, and a good coach will say so.
- Not a pep talk. Motivation fades by Tuesday. Coaching is about changing the thinking and habits that drive your behaviour every day.
- Not a replacement for strategy. You still need a sound business model. Mindset work makes sure the person executing it isn’t the bottleneck.
How I work with business owners
My approach draws on my training with NLP School London, Dr Joe Dispenza and Dan Martell. Each shaped a different part of how I coach: how language and patterns drive behaviour, how the mind and body respond to change, and how business growth depends on the person leading it.
A typical one-to-one engagement starts with a conversation about where you are, what feels stuck and what you want next. From there, sessions are practical. We look at real decisions you’re facing, notice the thinking behind them and agree on small actions you’ll take before we meet again. Every session should end with something you can use on Monday morning. You can read more about the format on my coaching page.
Signs you might benefit from a mindset coach
You don’t need to be in crisis to work with a coach. Some of the most rewarding work happens when things are going reasonably well but you sense you’re capable of more. Here are a few signs:
- You’re working harder than ever, but the business seems stuck at the same level.
- You know what needs to be done but keep putting off the big decisions.
- You second-guess your pricing, your ideas or yourself in important rooms.
- You find it hard to delegate, even to capable people.
- The business is growing, but you’ve lost sight of the life it was meant to give you.
An illustrative example (not a real client): imagine a founder who has run a profitable agency for ten years. Revenue is steady, but she has turned down two large projects because “the team isn’t ready”. In coaching, it becomes clear that the team is ready; she isn’t sure she can handle being more visible. Once that belief is named and tested, the decision becomes much simpler.
A simple exercise to try this week
Here is an exercise I use often. It takes about fifteen minutes and a notebook.
- Step 1: Write down one business decision you’ve been postponing for more than a month.
- Step 2: Underneath, complete this sentence five times without stopping to think: “I haven’t done this yet because…”
- Step 3: Circle the answer that feels most uncomfortable to read. That’s usually the real reason.
- Step 4: Ask yourself: “Is this definitely true? What evidence do I have against it?”
- Step 5: Choose one small action you can take in the next 48 hours that moves the decision forward, even slightly.
Most people are surprised that the real block is rarely about time or money. It’s usually a belief about themselves.
How to choose the right mindset coach
If you decide to work with someone, look for a coach who understands business from the inside, is clear about their training, and is honest about what coaching can and cannot do. Have a conversation before you commit. The right fit should feel both comfortable and a little challenging. You can learn more about my background here.
